10 Famous Indian Authors You Must Read

Indians have lot of amazing writers and poets, but the unpopularity of books and novels  among audience makes their effort less appreciated. Most of people barely known about famous Indian authors. Authors, Novelist, Writers interest small proportion of audiences. 

So here is small attempt to give you a short intro about Most Famous Indian Authors and Novelist. 

1. Chetan Bhagat - 

 Chetan Bhagat is Author with nine blockbuster novels. List includes 

One Night at the Call Centre2005, One Indian girl 2016 ,Revolution 2020 2011,Half Girlfriend 2014, The 3 Mistakes of My Life 2008, 2 States: The Story of My Marriage 2009, Five Point Someone. 2004. 

All these are successful novels. He brought many Indians to reading. Apart from writing novels,  he is Bollywood Screen Writer started with writing dialogue for movies based on his novels. Five novels have been adapted into movies. 

2. Amrita Pritam -

 Amrita Pritam is Indian Novelist, Poet and essay writer. She usually writes in Hindi and Punjabi, she was so famous that her work was translated  into many languages including English, Danish, Japanese, French, and Mandarin.

She has written almost  100 books of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays, a collection of Punjabi folk songs and an autobiography. 

She won awards like Sahitya Akademi Award for Punjabi Writer, Punjab Ratta etc. 

3. Jhumpa Lahiri - 

Jhumpa Lahiri is daughter of Indian immigrants from the Indian  state of West Bengal. Though she has American Nationality still her popular among Indians. 

She won many Awards and published many books and essays. She penned book like  Interpreter of Maladies, The Namesake, The Lowland, Unaccustomed Earth. 

4 . Khushwant Singh - 

Khushwant Singh was  Indian author, lawyer, diplomat, journalist and politician.  He survived 1947 Partition of India. 

His experience inspired to write Train to Pakistan, which well-known novel.Khuswant Singh is awarded Padam Bhushan and other awards. 

His other books are  A history of the Sikhs 1963, The Company of Women 1999, Truth, Love & a Little Malice2002, Delhi: A Novel1990, I shall not hear the nightingale1959, THE SUNSET CLUB 2010. 

5. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay- 

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay  was a Bengali writer. He is most popular writers,   the most popular, translated, adapted, and  Indian author of all time. 

 Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay  is  most popular novelist in the Bengali language. His  works include Devdas, Srikanta, Choritrohin, Parineeta, Grihadaha, Datta, Pather Dabi, Sesh Prasna etc.

6.Arundhati Roy - 

Arundhati Roy is Indian novelist, she won many awards like Man Booker Prize (1997); Sydney Peace Prize (2004). 

She is known for novel named The God Of Little Thing. She is politically active and write articles. 

7.Vikram Seth - 

Vikram Seth is Indian Author and Poet. He is known for book A Suitable Boy, Netflix is going to  release movie based on book. 

His other work include From Heaven Lake: Travels Through Sinkiang and Tibet 1983, Beastly Tales1991, All You Who Sleep Tonight 1990. 

He has received several awards such as Padma Shri, Sahitya Academy Award, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, WH Smith Literary Award and Crossword Book Award and many more. 

8.Ruskin Bond-

  Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He is well known for development in children literature.   Bond has written over 150 titles under his belt — many of these penned for children. 

His notable work includes The Room on the Roof (1956), The Blue Umbrella (1974), The night train at Deoli and other stories

(1988), A Flight of Pigeons 1978 etc. 

9.Rabindranath Tagore - 

Rabinadranath Tagore is well known Bengali and English writer, Bengali poet, writer, music composer, and painter from the Indian. 

Tagore penned Gitanjali, masterpiece. His other works include Works of Rabindranath Tagore, (1910), Kabuliwala and many such notable and heart warming works. 

10. R. K. Narayan  - 

Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami,  known as R. K. Narayan, was an Indian writer known for his work set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi. 

He has writte Maalgudi Ki Kahaniyan(1942),Swami and Friends(1935), The English Teacher 1945,The Bachelor of Arts(1937) and others.
